CommerzVentures is a Venture Capital firm backed by the German banking group Commerzbank. A fintech-focused VC firm, it was founded back in 2014 and has been standing independently since 2019.
Based in Frankfurt, the firm takes return-driven, non-strategic positions only. Their key focus is on early-stage FinTech, InsurTech, and Climate-Fintech companies starting at Series A in Europe, Israel, the USA, and Africa. The initial investment size ranges from €3m to €20m, and they zone in on the best startups in any sub-sectors.
As of today, CommerzVentures has raised a total of €550M across 3 funds, their latest being CommerzVentures Fund III. This fund was announced on Mar 1, 2022, and raised a total of €300M.
This follows the successful closing of the first 2 funds. CommerzVentures’ first fund, of €100 million, was launched in 2014, and its second – €150 million – in 2019.
The added value comes with the comprehensive network of partners, decision-makers, and investors within Fintech and financial services across the EU, as well as actionable intelligence and advisory.
As of today, the firm invested in 28 companies and claims to be “one of Europe’s foremost performing VCs”. 30% of its first fund investments have turned into unicorns (Mambu ManyPets, eToro, ), or decacorns (Marqeta).
Other notable investments include Cledara, Doconomy, Elwood, GetSafe, and iwoca. Portfolio company Marqeta IPOed on Nasdaq, while Curv and Payworks were acquired by Paypal and Visa, respectively.
